SIBO, Autotimmunity & Food Coloring

SIBO, Autoimmunity & Food Coloring

SIBO has been found in association with SLE, RA, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s, Depression, Endometriosis, Fibroids, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Thyroid Disease, and other chronic inflammatory conditions, yet very few believe that SIBO is the cause or that treating SIBO will correct the associated disease.

Despite the clear evidence in a number of scientific journals, including evidence of DNA damage resulting from red food dyes and potential liver damage in children, many are not aware of OR the extent of the use of food additives.

Ingestion /Absorption of Food Coloring can lead to the following:

1    Decreased and/or Lack of Oral Tolerance

    2    Interference with Digestive Enzymes

    3    Increased Intestinal Permeability

    4    Liver Toxicity

    5    Mitochondial Dysfunction

    6    Food Immune Reactivity

    7    Hypersensitivity Reactions

    8    Atopic Dermatitis

    9    Allergic—Rhinitis, Asthma, Angioedema

    10    Neurobehavioral Disorders

11    Interference with Neurotransmission and/or Conduction

    12    Reproductive Abnormalities

There has been an increase in autoimmunity, IBS and SIBO since the introduction of environmental chemicals such as glyphosate (Round Up™) in the US and Canada.

  • Reuters noted a 3-fold increase in IBD in Northern California since 1996.
  •  In Canada there has been a 10-fold increase in Ulcerative Colitis in children!

The extensive work done with bowel motility includes focus on the intracellular changes at the TNK-α, interleukin and cytokine levels. A recent publication entitled “Glyphosate affects the spontaneous motoric activity of intestine at very low doses - in vitro study”  Pestic Biochem Physiol. 2014 Jul; 113:25-30 demonstrates the effects of EDC’s on the gastrointestinal tract.

SIBO & FOOD SENSITIVITY TESTING

Cyrex ARRAY 10 Multiple Food Immune Reactivity Screen measures tissue-bound artificial food colors. Artificial colors are small molecule chemicals and the proper way to measure antibodies to such chemicals is by testing the chemical bound to human tissue protein. These chemicals and/or their metabolites can trigger inflammatory cytokines.

IN Optimized Physiology

A protein is properly broken down into various amino acids by digestive enzymes. The digestive enzyme trypsin cuts the initial bonds beginning the break down of a protein into peptide. The peptide is then further broken down into an amino acid that can then be absorbed in the GI tract.

However, when an artificial color molecule is present, it covalently bonds to the digestive enzyme (trypsin) and the consequence is trypsin is unable to cut the bonds to begin the break down of the protein into a peptide.

This results in large proteins that accumulate in the gastrointestinal tract and cause inflammation. The inflammation can then lead to the opening of the tight junctions in the gastrointestinal tract, also known as intestinal permeability or 'leaky gut' and trigger autoimmunity or relapse in SIBO.

Many people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and / or small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) at some point in their journey have found limiting specific foods perhaps grains resonates with them and may find they consume higher amounts of protein.

There are four natural sources of trypsin inhibitors: blood plasma, raw egg white, soybean (also binds chymotrypsin released in the small intestine), and Lima bean.

THe RESEARCH

A very interesting study in Scientific Journal looked at this exact mechanism using the protein bovine serum albumin (BSA). Digestive enzymes were added and observed from 10 to 60 minutes and measured the formation of peptides and amino acids.

    •    BSA+Digestive Enzyme was completely digested after 60 minutes.

    •    BSA+Color+Enzyme resulted in 80% inhibition in the digestion of protein!

Pelsser et al. in 2011 followed children and behavior score distribution. Significant improvement was measured, by both the pediatrician and the teachers ratings, in the children’s behavior after a 5 week restriction of food coloring.

EXCITING FUTURE!

Now we can shift even how to treat the complexities of SIBO and direct treatment at blocking the endocrine disrupting chemicals and begin to address the cause of autoimmunity.

In my practice, we have effectively treated multiple chronic and ‘incurable’ conditions. Patient's gain access to FDA approved medications that BLOCK the endocrine disrupting chemicals from entering the cell that cause mitochondrial dysfunction and propagate disease.
